Steve (2025)

Steve is a 2025 British-Irish drama directed by Tim Mielants, written by Max Porter, and based on his 2023 novella Shy. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Steve, a headteacher at a last-chance reform school for boys with behavioral challenges. Set in the mid-1990s, the story unfolds over a single day as Steve fights to save the school from closure while grappling with his own mental health.

In parallel, the film follows Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen torn between self-destruction and hope. Through their intertwined struggles, Steve explores themes of compassion, burnout, and redemption in a broken system. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, followed by a limited theatrical release on September 19 and global streaming via Netflix on October 3, 2025.
